Volkswagen turbodiesels await their fate near Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado SpringsEnlarge PhotoThursday marks the second anniversary of the VW dieselgate settlement, representing almost half a million consumers who bought various models of VW TDI diesel cars and SUVs that failed to comply with federal or California emissions requirements. Under the court-ordered consent decree approved June 28, 2016, the company was required to file a report showing that it had repaired or removed from the road 85 percent of the TDI diesel models it sold that didn't comply with emissions standards, both in California and nationwide. From the driver’s seat of this 2011 VW Golf TDI SportWagen, the memories conjured up are good ones. The VW TDI engine earned accolades in the early oughts for the way it combined good power and docile manners with upward of 35 mpg no matter how you drove it. The 2012 Beetle is decidedly a sportier looking car than the cutesy New Beetle it replaces. VW recently announced pricing for the 2012 Beetle, so here goes: 2.5L: $18,995USD. The bread and butter Beetle, powered by VW’s familiar 2.5L inline-5, rated at 170hp. A five-speed manual is standard, six-speed automatic optional. Standard equipment includes 17″ alloys and an 8 speaker stereo. 2.0L TSI: $23,395. The enthusiast’s Beetle, featuring a 2.0L, 200hp turbo four. A six-speed manual is standard, a six-speed DSG optional. The annual event allows journalists to compare completely new or redeveloped models back to back over a 4 day period. The vehicles are driven on a road route, race track and even an off road section for the trucks. With 70 of Canada’s top automotive journalists and a strict scoring process, the AJAC Canadian Car of the Year awards are highly respected across North America.
