November 16, 2010 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment Earlier this year, Tom Williams reviewed the Volkswagen’s Passat CC and aside from a few minor quibbles, loved the machine. For 2011, VW has chosen not to mess with a great product. Instead, they have added an R-Line model to the flagship sedan. The R-Line package is a cosmetic addition rather than a performance enhancing change. That really isn’t a bad thing, as the 4 cylinder turbo version is plenty quick and is well mated to VW’s excellent dual clutch transmission. The R-Line package includes: Unlike some manufacturer installed body kits that look tacked on and overly aggressive, the R-Line bits are subtle and tasteful. In fact, they look like they should have been there in the first place. Our tester was an R-Line model with technology package that adds in Navigation and a 30GB hard drive coupled with a wicked Dynaudio sound system that packs 600 watts and 10 speakers. Also included is a rear view camera, which … [Read more...] about 2011 Volkswagen Passat CC: drop dead sexy!

December 11, 2011 by Tom Williams 2 Comments When Volkswagen redesigned the 2011 Jetta, I was actually angry at them, and glad to see the car leave. As a long-time VW fan, and two time (and current) Jetta owner, I felt the brand had abandoned me with this cheap imitation of what was once a quality, fun to drive car. When news came that VW would be offering a new GLI, I was skeptical. I am pleased to report that the new GLI makes up for a lot-but not all of what infuriates me about the current base Jetta. While the drab Jetta SEL nearly put me to sleep just by looking at it, our Tornado Red GLI is remarkably sportier looking in comparison. The changes VW made from the standard Jetta are few, but extremely effective. The GLI’s ride height has been dropped half an inch, the front grille and fascia replaced for a far more aggressive look. Our Autobahn model sported upgraded 18″ wheels and painted brake rotors. Minor changes, but collectively they all … [Read more...] about Review: 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Autobahn

Owners of owners 2.0-liter 4-cylinder cars have to complete filing their settlement paperwork by Sept. 1 to be eligible for at least $5,100 in compensation from Volkswagen. All claims must be settled by Dec. 31, but they must be submitted by Sept. 1 to be eligible. READ THIS: Gauging VW's progress on second diesel-settlement anniversary (Updated) Elizabeth Cabraser, the lead plaintiff's attorney representing TDI owners in a class-action lawsuit against Volkswagen, told Green Car Reports that some TDI owners filed claims early on in the settlement, but have not submitted paperwork to finalize their claims and choose whether they want VW to buy their cars back or repair them. Some owners may have been waiting to hear the success of the repairs or the size of VW's settlement before deciding what remedy they wanted. Others may be … [Read more...] about VW TDI owners face deadline to finalize claims
Volkswagen turbodiesels await their fate near Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado SpringsEnlarge PhotoThursday marks the second anniversary of the VW dieselgate settlement, representing almost half a million consumers who bought various models of VW TDI diesel cars and SUVs that failed to comply with federal or California emissions requirements. Under the court-ordered consent decree approved June 28, 2016, the company was required to file a report showing that it had repaired or removed from the road 85 percent of the TDI diesel models it sold that didn't comply with emissions standards, both in California and nationwide. Brown 2011 Volkswagen TDI Sportwagen listed for sale after emissions repairsEnlarge PhotoThe gentle rumble under the brown station wagon’s hood brings back memories of not too long ago as I sneak its 6-speed manual through the gears. So, too, the way it accelerates down a highway on-ramp—like warm maple syrup, the brown wagon moves substantially with just enough verve. From the driver’s seat of this 2011 VW Golf TDI SportWagen, the memories conjured up are good ones. The VW TDI engine earned accolades in the early oughts for the way it combined good power and docile manners with upward of 35 mpg no matter how you drove it. But there are reminders of the past, not the least of which is a thin line of dust coughed up through the air vents when I cycle the air conditioner.Volkswagen TDI diesel cars stored at Pontiac Silverdome (Photo by Jalopnik)Enlarge Photo That’s because the brown diesel wagon I’m driving spent last winter confined to a dusty parking … [Read more...] about 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI SportWagen driven: Fixed, but does it matter?
