Vince Ellis Detroit Free Press Published 1:46 PM EST Jan 11, 2019 LOS ANGELES — There was only a casual mention of playoffs. No cryptic messages signaling organizational change were offered. When Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores spoke with reporters briefly at halftime of his team’s blowout loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, there were no surprises. That was to be expected with Pistons coach Dwane Casey and senior adviser Ed Stefanski only entrenched since the summer. Gores just stated the obvious. The Pistons have their star in the Blake Griffin. The organizational goal is to maximize the window of Griffin, 29, who is having a resurgent season after several campaigns marred by injuries. “We couldn’t expect more from Blake than what he’s done. He has done incredible work, and everybody didn’t know what he could do — but we couldn’t expect more,” Gores said at Staples Center. “Beyond his stats, he really … [Read more...] about Detroit Pistons want to build around Blake Griffin. Vince Ellis Detroit Free Press Published 7:23 PM EDT Sep 25, 2018 It was new territory for the Andre Drummond. The Detroit Pistons center, the franchise’s longest-tenured player, stood on the floor of a practice gym at Crisler Arena on Tuesday and was asked about the maize-and-blue surroundings. “It’s different, I’ve never done this my entire career,” Drummond said with a laugh after the first practice of training camp. “I’ve been here for seven years and never left the Palace once. It’s different scenery and it’s kind of cool to be away from home and be under the same roof with all the guys. It kind of forces us to be together.” That’s the point. The result of new coach Dwane Casey and power forward Blake Griffin brainstorming, the Pistons will spend the week conducting training camp at Michigan’s William Davidson Player Development Center, which is named for the former Pistons owner who died in 2009. … [Read more...] about Detroit Pistons build unity at Dwane Casey’s first camp
Vince Ellis Detroit Free Press Published 7:00 AM EDT Sep 23, 2018 Stan Van Gundy is enjoying life. In the spring, he took his wife, Kim, on a European vacation, their first as a couple. Last month, Kim gifted him with birthday tickets to the Fox Theater where they grooved to the sounds of Gladys Knight and the O’Jays. The next day, he played fetch with family dogs, Opie and Eastwood, in the backyard of his lakefront home in Clarkston. Later, he was a picture of comfort inside as the dogs slumbered, worn out from playing on the warm August day. It’s clear the former Detroit Pistons coach doesn’t have to work another day the rest of his life. A comfortable retirement where he works at his leisure awaits – if he wants it. But with his May firing still fresh, he’s not sure he wants comfort. He thinks he might want to coach again. With NBA training camps opening this week, he knows there’s nothing out there to replace … [Read more...] about Detroit Pistons ending may have SVG to try coaching again

Gores, who has owned the Pistons since June 2011, feels fortunate that Casey was available after the deciding to plot a new course for the franchise when he fired Stan Van Gundy as team president and coach. Vince Ellis Detroit Free Press Published 5:02 p.m. UTC May 28, 2018 It used to be simple. For NBA prospects with the option to return to school, they needed to hear one thing: A first-round guarantee. But in recent years, since the unprecedented infusion of TV in 2016, guaranteed money has been available for picks taken in the first half of the second round. Wisconsin junior power forward Ethan Happ is aware of the trend. Happ, who worked out for the Detroit Pistons on Thursday, and his agent will have that in mind when they decide whether to keep his name in the draft as the Wednesday deadline looms. The Pistons have a just second-round pick (42nd overall) in the 60-pick June 21 draft. “Detroit has a great pick and I thought I had a good workout, but obviously there are other good candidates in talking with their GM and assistant GMs,” Happ said at the Auburn Hills practice facility. “There’s no guarantees in this draft business, but I’m … [Read more...] about Ethan Happ debates NBA draft or Wisconsin; What about Detroit Pistons?
