Today’s Aston Martin seeks to cultivate a crisp, modern, James Bond in a very trim suit image. There was a time when things over there were more double-breasted, when they succeeded in building the most powerful (and possibly most moronic) car in the world. This story originally ran on Nov. 7, 2014 and is being featured again for the Jalopnik Christmas Evergreen Bonanza. In 1987, Ford bought a 75-percent stake in Aston Martin. In 1994, Ford bought it outright, and in 1999 rolled it into their doomed Premium Auto Group. Or Premium Something Group. I can’t even be bothered to look up its exact name, but it was a loose confederacy of Lincoln, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, maybe Mercury, and Aston Martin. The keen-eyed among you will note that it does not make sense to have the same company running both Jaguar and Aston Martin. Why? It is the magic of diversity — a Japanese-sponsored car designed and engineered by Japanese and Americans, manufactured by Americans and Japanese who have shown over the decades they understand the American motoring soul better than most of their competitors. Brand new cars all seemed to be going the oval route, but of course such expensive indulgences were off the table. I fell into the tertiary category listed in the first paragraph with regard to funding. Starting at 14, I worked as a cashier at the local Kroger, making almost no money per hour (minus union dues) while saving up for my eventual purchase when I obtained an Indiana … [Read more...] about QOTD: What Models Were on Your First Car Shopping List?
