Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 11:52 p.m. UTC Aug 8, 2018 Time for a Detroit Red Wings mailbag. Thanks as always for the many great questions. HSJ: Howard ended up starting 57 games last season because neither Petr Mrazek (8-7-3 in 18 starts, .909 save percentage and 2.89 goals-against average) nor Jared Coreau (0-5-1 in seven starts, .867 save percentage and 4.26 goals-against average) were reliable. Unless Howard has a poor camp/exhibition season, I’d expect him to be in net for the season opener, Oct. 4 at home against Columbus. There’s a back-to-back on the road three days later, so that’ll afford a look at Bernier. So long as both play well, expect Howard to see more starts — but not as many as last season. The Wings, as a team, want to be competitive next season. They’ll need topnotch goaltending to accomplish that (they don’t have the superstar skaters to mask average goaltending). Ideally Howard and Bernier push … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings mailbag: Is Jimmy Howard trade looming?

When much of the region went dark during the June 29 derecho, the traffic signals at Howard County-owned intersections didn't miss a beat.Battery power kicked in, sparing police officers from the dangerous business of directing traffic and motorists at unmanned intersections from having to play a white-knuckle, vehicular version of dodge ball."All of our battery backups worked," County Executive Ken Ulman said. "All the signals stayed on. In areas where the power was off for an extended time, generators took over."The same thing happened in Anne Arundel County, which has battery backup — but not generators — for all 108 of its signals, from Brooklyn Park to South County. Now Ulman would like to see about 20 busy state-owned intersections upgraded so they, too, can be powered by generators in an emergency. It's a $1 million safety initiative that he says the county will pay for over five years if the state won't."It's the kind of thing where you can come up with 10 reasons … [Read more...] about Howard Co. lights its intersections — even in outages
