The tropics are finally starting to light up as the first month of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season draws to a close, and a weak disturbance tracked this week just off the Texas Gulf Coast could bring some much-needed rain to Houston and beyond. At long last, showers and thunderstorms are forecast to kick off in Houston on Monday afternoon as a frontal boundary moves in from the northeast, combining with onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico to pop a weeks-long heat bubble that put much of Greater Houston into a drought. Houston normally sees about 4.75 inches of rain in the month of June. This year, the Bayou City has recorded less than a quarter inch. Forecasters with the National Weather Service (NWS) in League City predict a majority of the area will see between a tenth of an inch to an inch of rain by late Monday. "Any little bit helps," said NWS meteorologist Brian Kyle. "But I don't think the amount that's forecast is enough to break the drought." Y'all. Houston has increased rain chances this week from tropical disturbance in Gulf
Houston is under the threat of increased rain chances Wednesday through Saturday, with several inches of rain and the potential for minor street flooding in the latest forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS) in League City. The latest predictions aren't ironclad, however. Meteorologists in Houston and Miami are closely watching a tropical disturbance brewing along the southern Texas Gulf Coast, which as of Wednesday morning has a 40 percent chance of developing into an organized system over the next few days. But the trajectory and intensity of the potential system is still uncertain, meaning Houston could either see more or less rainfall than predicted. "The northern edge of the rain associated with this developing system will reach into our region [Wednesday] afternoon, but how far northwards will heavily depend on the [location] of the low pressure system," NWS meteorologist Jimmy Fowler wrote in a detailed weather briefing Wednesday morning . "Weak, unorganized … [Read more...] about Houston has increased rain chances this week from tropical disturbance in Gulf
Houston under flood watch as rain from tropical system pummels SE Texas
Houston and communities to the south are under a flood watch until Friday evening as rain showers and thunderstorms start to light up the weather radar Thursday morning. Heavy showers will dump three to six inches of rain across the southern portion of Greater Houston, including the metro, between now and Friday evening, according to meteorologists with the National Weather Service (NWS) in League City. The bulk of the rain remained offshore Thursday morning, but forecasters predict showers will move north overnight when most of the rain will pummel the area. Because of the forecast, NWS issued a flood watch for Harris, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Chambers, Wharton and Matagorda counties until 7 p.m. Friday. Flash flood warnings could be issued as rain begins to fall if warranted. Authorities urge drivers to stay off roadways if they become flooded. Latest visible satellite imagery is showing #Invest95L as a weak circulation just off the Lower TX coast this afternoon. … [Read more...] about Houston under flood watch as rain from tropical system pummels SE Texas
Houston will finally see some rain next week after dangerous heat
Houston could finally see the skies open up early next week after nearly a month of hot and dry conditions across the state, meteorologists forecast. Houston has been without significant rain for some time, creating drought conditions bad enough for the city to implement voluntary water restrictions . Other communities south of the city are in an extreme drought. Since June 1, the Bayou City has seen less than a quarter-inch of rain, according to Tim Cady, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in League City. The city normally records 4.75 inches this month. That all could change, significantly or not, come Monday when widespread showers are predicted to move into Southeast Texas, bringing welcomed rain as well as thunderstorms starting in the morning hours. "Hopefully it will bring some much-needed rain," Cady said in a phone call Friday. "A lot of our area is in a drought right now. Hopefully, this should provide some relief as we see this more widespread coverage … [Read more...] about Houston will finally see some rain next week after dangerous heat
Houston’s first medical marijuana dispensary is now open in the Heights. So how do you qualify?
Houston is finally home to a legal weed dispensary, but don't get too excited just yet — it's reserved for those with medical prescriptions, which can only be given to individuals with specific ailments. So, who can land a prescription? Texas Original, a chain of medical marijuana dispensaries across Texas, opened at 1714 Houston Ave. this week, offering people with prescriptions an easier way to obtain an array of legal marijuana-laced products, according to ReNew Houston's Evan MacDonald . The company is the first of its kind in the Bayou City and the first Texas Original storefront open five days a week, offering next-day pickup for customers. The dispensary is strictly for those authorized under the Lone Star State's Compassionate Use Program, which requires a diagnosis of a certain disease or ailment and a prescription from a doctor. The law currently only allows prescriptions for a handful of medical issues, which include: ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, epilepsy, … [Read more...] about Houston’s first medical marijuana dispensary is now open in the Heights. Houston man gets life in prison after fatally shooting 3 men
HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston man has been sentenced to life in prison for shooting four men, including three who were killed, in the aftermath of a drug deal gone bad, according to prosecutors. A jury in Harris County last week found Joshua Kelsey, 37, guilty of three counts of murder before sentencing him. Prosecutors say Kelsey shot two men — one fatally — after buying heroin at a home in May 2020. A witness testified that Kelsey was angry at one of the men, Louis Hodges, for an incident the day before involving a small bag of heroin. After stealing a car belonging to one of the men, Kelsey drove to the home of a friend, Michael Miller, and fatally shot him, police said. Authorities said Kelsey blamed Miller for getting rid of a recreational vehicle that he had stored at Miller’s home. Investigators said Kelsey believed the loss of the RV led to him becoming homeless. Kelsey then to drove to the home of an acquaintance, Juan Garcia, and fatally shot him. It was unclear why … [Read more...] about Houston man gets life in prison after fatally shooting 3 men

Anti-transgender activist Kelly Neidert’s group is expanding into Houston, she says
On a sweltering afternoon in Dallas, Kelly Neidert stood alone on a busy corner near the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. She waved a handwritten sign reading "Dr. Lopez is transitioning little kids" as drivers passed, her eyes shielded from the summer sun by colorful 80s-style shades. Neidert's sign took aim at Dr. Ximena Lopez’s work as the leader of UT Southwestern’s Genecis Clinic, which focuses on gender-affirming medical care, offering mental health services and hormone treatments for transgender youth. The clinic won praise from UT Southwestern when it opened in 2015 and Lopez participated in a host of interviews to discuss her team’s work with trans youth . However, in recent years, UT Southwestern began to shift away from publicly lauding the clinic and eventually moved to shut it down last November, suggesting “Media attention and political and scientific controversy, as well as UT Southwestern’s status as a state agency, were considered in the months … [Read more...] about Anti-transgender activist Kelly Neidert’s group is expanding into Houston, she says
