When attentions turned to the fact that Formula 1 was fast approaching its 1000th World Championship grand prix, fans tingled with excitement and drew up their wish lists for the entertainment on show and the venue that would hold the honour of hosting this landmark event. The usual suspects were on offer: Silverstone International Circuit, the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, the Circuit de Monaco and the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. Could F1 even visit Suzuka Circuit six months earlier than is customary? On 31 August 2018, many hopes and dreams were crushed. As the draft calendar for the 2019 season was made public knowledge, it became apparent that the sixteenth Chinese Grand Prix and the Shanghai International Circuit would host race number 1000. It wasn’t for the want of trying though. ‘Silverstone the heritage of F1’ Several F1 bosses, including commercial chief Sean Bratches, would have preferred the milestone to take place at Silverstone, the site of the … [Read more...] about OPINION: Why China is a fitting venue for F1’s 1000th Grand Prix
1000 pound bend venue hire
We first saw the 2019 McLaren Speedtail last night, but that was just a limited set of pictures in a leak. Now the official pics and specs are out, and my word is it a monster. Everything on it is designed for pure, raw speed. Not only does it have 1,035 horsepower, but it’s got flexible carbon fiber that bends. Yes, bends. Let’s get the hard numbers that we know out of the way first. Yes, 1,035 horsepower. A weight of a mere 3,153 pounds dry. From zero to 186 mph in 12.8 seconds. A hybrid powertrain – and weirdly, McLaren isn’t saying anything else about the engine just yet. In truth, we got some hint of that in one of the pictures from last night, but we weren’t quite sure what we were looking at. Was that just a spoiler on the car? It had to be just stuck like that, right? I mean, carbon fiber doesn’t bend. It just doesn’t. You can mould it into any sort of shape you like, but after it was stuck in that shape, bound in plastic resin, it was … [Read more...] about The 2019 McLaren Speedtail Has Flexible Carbon Fiber That Bends and It Goes 250 MPH
Bob Vousdens Morris 1000 with his then girlfriend who is now is wife of 46 years. Picture: Bob Vousden Bob Vousden Bob Vousden had a hairy moment after tackling the hairpin bends on a mountain road when the brakes failed in his well loaded Morris 1000. Having learned to drive using my dad’s 1956 Daimler Conquest, it was a big change having my first car in 1969 – a 1958 Morris 1000.My mates were buying Minis but I was concerned about doing maintenance and the ‘Moggy’ 1000 was so simple. My thinking was that it was going to be easier to change clutches and gearboxes on the roadside outside my house without the need for a block and tackle lifting gear.I paid £70 for it in the May and, in July, was heading off to Italy on holiday. One slight problem concerned me was the oil light came on when the engine was idling and, although the car had passed its MOT a week before the holiday, the helpful mechanic told me the car wouldn’t get to Upminster … [Read more...] about My First Car: Enjoying great break until Morris 1000’s brake failure!
Car enthusiasts are always trying to shed weight from their vehicles to improve performance. But while most folks never precisely find out how that weight savings really helps them, YouTube channel TheHoonigans decided to try to measure what removing 1,000 pounds of girth does to the 1/8-mile time of a P71 Ford Crown Victoria police interceptor. The test isn’t particularly scientific, especially with the group apparently only doing one run of each vehicle weight, starting with the control weight of 4,101 pounds, then dropping 300, 600, 800 and then finally 1,005 pounds by shedding passengers and car parts. Still, like that stripped-down Tesla Model S drag strip run, it’s a fun test, and in the end, with 1,005 pounds cut out, the Crown Vic’s initial 1/8 mile time of 10.79 seconds drops significantly to 10.32. less slow. And that’s always what everyone is after. … [Read more...] about Here’s How Much Quicker a Ford Crown Victoria Gets With 1,000 Pounds Removed
The Bugatti Chiron is an absolute engineering marvel, and its W16 is as well, with a twin-to-quad turbo setup that makes 1,500 horsepower while not weighing any more than its predecessor in the 1000-horsepower Veyron. But how much does that engine weigh, exactly? A ton. Well, almost. The boost in power but not weight came up in this recent Carfection walkaround video of the engine and other details of the Chiron. Bugatti’s Andy Wallace pointed out that the Chiron’s engine makes significantly more power than the Veyron but doesn’t weigh more than it. This is with, remember, significantly larger turbos and, presumably, beefier components all through the rest of the engine to better withstand all that power. Wallace points out an all-composite intake manifold, just about lost in the maze of tubes and hoses running around everything. What Wallace didn’t say is how much that weight is exactly, so I reached out to Bugatti. Engine: 961 pounds (436 kg) Transmission: … [Read more...] about The Bugatti Chiron’s Engine Alone Weighs Almost 1,000 Pounds
