Three wild years after the introduction of the Tesla Model 3, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has finally introduced its long-promised crossover sibling, the Tesla Model Y. After painfully joking and meandering his way through the history of the Tesla model lineup—at one point joking that the lineup is now “Semi SEXY” with evidently no love for the Roadster—as well as the rest of the company’s history, Musk finally got to the point and showed us the Model Y. The Model 3, But Bigger As Elon promised when he announced the reveal date of the Model Y, the new crossover is approximately 10 percent bigger in size, and will be priced to cost about 10 percent more than the Model 3. In the company’s final 2018 update, it mentioned the Model Y would share a platform and about 75 percent of its components with the 3. Like the Model 3, Musk claims the Model Y should get five-star safety ratings. It also gets the same self-driving hardware that’s standard on all Model … [Read more...] about Tesla Model Y: This Is It

This particular teaser video, published on Twitter, offers us our first rear three-quarter view of the SUV. Unfortunately, the car is covered in a black sheet but that doesn’t mean we can’t see a number of important styling details. First and foremost, it’s clear that the Model Y is almost identical in shape to the Model X with a voluptuous rear-end and a rear window that stretches right to the vehicle’s rear fascia. Like the Model X, there also appears to be a small spoiler. A separate teaser recently released provided a glimpse of the Model Y’s front fascia. PRODUCTION of the Tesla Model Y is to start in November 2019, according to latest reports. Elon Musk is reportedly taking bids from suppliers for contracts, the Reuters news agency claims. The Model Y is the unofficial name for the crossover based on the £30,000 Tesla Model 3 that's currently being built. The Y would complete Musk's "S3XY" product plan joining the original Model S saloon and Model X SUV. According to Reuters, production of the Y will start in November next year at Tesla's California plant. Annual production is claimed to be 500,000 in the US - with some also in China. That's some way short of Musk's claims back in February that Tesla would build a million Ys a year. The bold figure seems ambitious given the Model 3 is currently embroiled in production problems. Tesla had planned to make 20,000 a month by December 2017 but just over 2,000 rolled off the line in the last three months of the year. The Model Y is just one of many future project on Musk's radar. more … [Read more...] about Tesla Model Y production ‘to start in November 2019’ as Elon Musk completes ‘S3XY’ line-up
