BERLIN — Volkswagen will not display its core brand at the Paris motor show this year, the latest and most prominent carmaker to steer clear of the biennial industry gathering. Europe's largest automotive group has scaled back brand presentations at traditional car shows, including Detroit and Frankfurt, since the VW emissions scandal erupted in 2015. This has partly been as a cost-cutting measure for VW which has been reducing spending to counter the multi-billion dollar costs of dealing with the fallout of cheating diesel emissions tests, but it also mirrors a wider sector trend. Many of the traditional industry gatherings have registered a drop in visitor numbers since 2000, forcing carmakers to rethink how they spend their marketing budgets. "The Volkswagen brand is continually reviewing its participation in international motor shows," it said on Thursday, adding it could instead host "various communications activities" in the French capital, including test drives. Tweet TweetThe French people from Peugeot announced their plans to unveil the new 208 XY in production form at this year’s edition of the Paris Motor Show. The new 208 XY will share the stand at Paris with the sportier 208 GTi, both models being previewed by concepts earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show. In terms of styling, the new French model gets 17-inch alloy wheels, new front grille with chrome accents but also fog lamp surrounds, mirror caps and window trim in the same finish. Entering the cabin you will find leather seats and dashboard, a panoramic glass roof, 7-inch touch screen display, automatic parking assist, aluminum pedals and a new steering wheel. Under the bonnet, the new 208 XY comes with a 1.6-liter e-HDi with outputs of 92hp and 115hp but also a 1.6-liter VTi with 120hp and a range-topping 1.6-liter THP delivering 155 horsepower.
