There’s no use paying for something you don’t need on a new BMW, even if nobody “needs” a new BMW. To sweeten the deal on its latest crossovers, BMW is offering two-wheel-drive versions of its X2 and X3, a move that effectively lowers starting prices. At their debut, both the X2 and X3 were available only in xDrive all-wheel-drive form. Now, the sDrive version—front-wheel drive on the Mini-platform-based X2, rear-wheel drive on the X3—is the base trim. The 2018 X2 sDrive28i starts at $37,395, which is $2000 less than the xDrive28i. (It also brings the X2 closer to the X1; it’s now $2500 extra instead of $4500.) Compared to the 2018 xDrive30i, it’s $1650 less expensive. The EPA hasn’t published fuel-economy ratings for these new variants, but we wouldn’t expect more than a 1- or 2-mpg gain in … [Read more...] about BMW Adds Cheaper Two-Wheel Drive Variants to the X2 and X3 Range
Earlier this week we heard, via our colleagues at Car and Driver, that Audi has no plans to build a successor to the current R8 supercar. Well, according to another report, the R8 isn't the only big-engine Audi going away. The W12-powered variant of the A8 is set for the chopping block as well.In a discussion attended by Car and Driver, Peter Mertens, Audi's R&D boss, revealed to journalists at the Geneva Motor Show that the Audi A8's 585-horsepower W12 trim is not long for this world. “We will not have the 12-cylinder forever,” Mertens said. “There are customers who really want the 12-cylinder and they are happy with it and are going to get it," he added. "But this is going to be the last installation." Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Audi revealed the current A8 in 2017; assuming the W12 is available for the full lifespan of this model, 12-cylinder fans will likely have several years to get their large-displacement Audi. And if you're a fan of VW Group's … [Read more...] about The New A8 Will Be the Last 12-Cylinder Audi
We love driving performance cars here at Road & Track, but once in a while, we exchange the keys to our favorite sport coupes for something more soft and comfortable. Which new car do you think is the most luxurious? I personally love the Rolls-Royce Wraith. It has every feature you'd expect from a Rolls, with tons of power, plenty of sound-deadening, and unparalleled comfort. What makes the Wraith different, though, is its looks. The swooped fastback rear end is totally unique, and makes the car stand out from every other big luxury car out there. This mint green colored example built for noted Rolls-Royce customer Michael Fux is especially nice. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Now we'd like to know: What do you think is the most luxurious new car on the market right now? It doesn't have to be something wildly expensive or extravagant like the Wraith, either. It could be anything, as long as you think it's luxurious. Let us know in the comments below. … [Read more...] about What’s the Most Luxurious New Car You Can Buy?
UK publication Auto Express paired up two of the hottest wagons on sale today for a drag race. The Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon against the Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo locked in a battle for long-roof supremacy. Which wins? Pick one.Well, in the most important metrics—0-60 mph, 1/4-mile—the AMG takes it. Not a huge surprise considering its working with 603 horsepower to the Porsche's 550, but, the Panamera still makes an impressive showing. It's actually 0.3 seconds quicker to 100 mph, and not far behind in every other metric. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below And, I've said this sort of thing before, but when cars like this face off, there are no real losers. We should be thrilled to live in a world where Mercedes-AMG and Porsche offer wagons that can keep up with supercars, so maybe we should consider ourselves the true winners here. And in any case, Porsche has the 680-hp Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo waiting in the wings for a rematch. … [Read more...] about Which Super-Wagon Is Quicker?
The modern Golf GTI is fantastic to drive, but it's grown considerably over the years. Gone is the pure, lightweight chassis and simplistic setup of the very first GTIs. But don't worry, Volkswagen still makes a car remarkably similar to the Mk1 and Mk2 cars: The Up! GTI. The Up! is Volkswagen's smallest car, and even in its hotted-up GTI form, remains incredibly simplistic. It's powered by a 113-horsepower engine, sending torque to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. There are even drum brakes and a torsion beam at the back. Combine those features with the Up's relatively light curb weight, and you've got yourself a modern interpretation of VW's vintage performance hatch. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Henry Catchpole of Carfection spent some time behind the wheel, and finds the Up! GTI incredibly easy to thrash around, and shockingly enjoyable. He does note however, the car isn't as adjustable mid-corner as the Fiesta ST, and traction control can't be … [Read more...] about The VW Up! GTI Is the Real Replacement for the Original Golf GTI
BMW M2 Yes, the BMW M3 and M4 have more power, but we still love the M2. It's quick, balanced, and wonderful to drive. It also sounds fantastic. Even if a little bit of what you hear in the cabin is fake, the exhaust note itself is still excellent. If you didn't know it was turbocharged, you'd think the M2 was running a good old fashioned, naturally aspirated BMW inline six. … [Read more...] about 12 New Cars with the Best-Sounding Six-Cylinder Engines
Bentley’s Mulliner division has let its latest creation out of the stable, and the one-off Bentley Bentayga by Mulliner, Inspired by The Festival is as ornate as its name is long. For those of us less attuned to the world of equestrian sports, The Festival is a four-day horse-racing event in the United Kingdom staged by the Jockey Club. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below As its name implies, the Bentayga by Mulliner, Inspired by The Festival is, well, inspired by The Festival. Painted in a green shade called Spruce, the large luxury SUV features contrasting black trim and rides on massive silver and black-painted 21-inch wheels. The real magic can be found within the British crossover’s cabin, though, where Mulliner has lined the dashboard, doors, and seats in either Cumbrian Green or Saddle Brown leather—appropriately equestrian color choices. Finishing things off are niceties such as burr walnut wood, which Bentley said is inspired by the furniture located in … [Read more...] about Mulliner Builds a Bentley Bentayga Inspired by Equestrian
Rimac Automobili / The Grand Tour Chances are you've heard of Richard Hammond's huge wreck behind the wheel of a Rimac Concept_One while filming the second season of The Grand Tour. Well, Rimac just revealed its newest car, the C_Two, at the Geneva Motor Show, and it has a clever easter egg aimed right at Hammond and his horrifying crash. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below If you take a close look at the rear of the C_Two, you'll see underneath the rear window glass is a center-mounted fire extinguisher, held down by a leather strap. On that leather strap, the words "In case of hillclimb, extinguish fire" are printed. It's a jab at Hammond, who rolled the one-of-eight electric hypercar down a hill, setting it ablaze. DriveTribe asked Hammond's opinion on the matter, and he seemed happy about the news. “I’m delighted. I’ve always wanted to have a real influence in car design," he said. "And now I have.”Via Carscoops … [Read more...] about The Rimac C_Two Electric Hypercar Is Richard Hammond-Proof
DW Burnett / PUPPYKNUCKLES Despite the onslaught of turbochargers drowning out the sound of new performance cars, there are still a bunch of six-cylinder cars on the market today that make great noises. Which one do you think sounds the best? The first car that comes to mind for me is the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. While most turbocharged V6s sound lifeless, raspy, or muffled, the Alfa's 505-horsepower 2.9-liter engine manages to create a throaty, joyful sound. Considering the block is basically a Ferrari V8 with two cylinders lopped off, that doesn't come as much of a surprise. The fact it drives so well is just a bonus. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Now we'd like to know: Which new six-cylinder equipped car do you think sounds the best? It doesn't have to be turbocharged like the Alfa, either—it could be something naturally aspirated or supercharged, if that's what you're into. Let us know in the comments below. … [Read more...] about Which New Car Has the Best-Sounding Six-Cylinder Engine?
Máté Petrány / Road&Track If you're a fan of the Kia Stinger, but can't get over the fact you can't get it with a stick, Hyundai may have a solution for you. The new 2019 Genesis G70, which is based off the Stinger and rivals cars like the 3-Series, C-Class, and A4, will be getting a six-speed trim level in the US. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below The news comes from the EPA, which recently released fuel economy ratings for the G70, which we drove in September of 2017. It seems buyers will only be able to get the manual with the smaller 255-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-four cylinder engine, and rear-wheel drive. Car and Driver suspects the stick will come exclusively in the Sport trim, which includes Brembo brakes, 19-inch wheels wrapped in summer tires, a head-up display, and a limited-slip differential. Those seeking a G70 with all-wheel drive or the bigger 365-horsepower 3.3-liter turbo V6 engine will have to settle for an eight-speed automatic.
