Almost the entire automotive community is in agreement that if you want to buy a true, blue-blooded premium sports car that delivers the best possible driving experience for the money, you buy a Porsche Cayman. It’s the epitome of of precision, grace and fluidity. In fact, it’s so good that it’s long been rumored that Porsche has intentionally hamstrung the Cayman so that it wouldn’t cannibalize 911 sales. So it’s actually quite surprising that none of Porsche’s German competitors have actually made a proper rival. Although, that might change. It’s rumored that Mercedes-AMG might be taking a shot at the Porsche Cayman with a mid-engine sports car of its own. While nothing has been officially announced by AMG, Autocar is reporting that a mid-engine Cayman competitor has already been pitched to the board of management and, from the sounds of it, it’s going to happen. According to Autocar, such a mid-engine AMG would sit below the AMG … [Read more...] about Mercedes-AMG to make mid-engine Porsche Cayman-fighter — Should BMW follow?
According to a new report, the performance division of Mercedes-Benz known as Mercedes-AMG are preparing to take aim at the Porsche 718 Cayman and a bunch of other cars directed at enthusiasts with their very own offering. The new AMG model has been presented to Merc’s board of management as an indirect successor to the SLC, with a possible mid-rear engine layout and styling to provide it with clear links to the upcoming Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar. It eats tarmac for breakfast and throws flames through its exhaust pipes. The Mercedes-AMG GT S has just become more fierce and more arrogant than ever, thanks to a wide body kit from Prior Design. The car is now called the PD700 GTR and it comes with solid fender flares and newly added side skirts. New aprons, a more aggressive bonnet, massive rear diffuser and a fixed rear wing bring it closer to its more potent younger brother the Mercedes-AMG GT R. No word on the cost of the body kit made entirely of carbon fiber. The car now runs on 9.5×20 front and 12.5×21 rear wheels shod with 245/30 and 305/25 Continental ZR21 tires, respectively. At the moment, the most powerful Mercedes-Benz X-Class is the X350d which is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel with 258 horsepower (192 kW) and 550 Nm of torque, but the mid-size pickup might offer a V8 in the future. This is according to the X-Class engineering boss, Frank Schumacher, who recently said to Drive that a V8 X-Class was possible and that production could happen if demand was strong enough. Mercedes-Benz has announced a further investment amount of €600 million (about R9,5-billion at the current exchange rate) into the East London facility confirming the next-gen C-Class will be locally built. Earlier on in the year, the plant began building the hotter C43, C63 and C63 S models alongside the regular C-Class offerings and now this expansion investment will include the construction of a new paint shop and a new body shop, an upgrade of the assembly shop as well as new logistic warehouses. Mercedes says this expansion (two buildings) will comprise an area of approximately 100 000 m², which translates to an increase of two-thirds to the existing production space. At least not in the sixth generation’s life cycle. “Anything is technically possible, but there is no consideration at this stage for a 53 powertrain for the C-Class. The 43 package is enough for this vehicle, it’s a lot lighter than an E-Class, I think it does everything that you want a C43 to do, … [Read more...] about Mercedes-AMG C53 Will Not Happen With Current-Gen C-Class
There are people out there who find the C63 the way to go and there are people who think the C43 is the more reasonable and responsible choice but what if you are slap bang in the middle of the two? Well it seems the Mercedes-AMG team have the answer for you. A new trademark has emerged from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) suggesting the C-Class range will sooner or later feature a C53 model in the same vein as the bigger E53 and CLS 53 models that were introduced at the beginning of the year in Detroit. Both the Mercedes E63 AMG and its slightly more potent twin brother the E63 S AMG are two machines that hold high chairs in the AMG council as they represent the nature of the AMG department: powerful, loud and very fast. Now, a German tuner by the name of RENNtech has a performance package for both models that aims to further improve them without ruining them. From the factory, both the E63 and E63 S produce a grumpy muscle car-like noise and sound like they’re trying to rip the tarmac apart when in Sport and Sport+ modes, the two Mercedes-AMG products also produce around 563 hp (420 kW) and 603 hp (450 kW) respectively. For more power and noise, RENNtech introduces a performance package for them called the R800. Thanks to a BMC air filter, BOV adapters, a fuel system upgrade as well as an upgraded turbo tech, the R800 performance package equips both the E63 and E63 S with a jump to 800 PS (789 hp/588 kW). Also, while both models currently produce torque figures of 750 Nm and … [Read more...] about RENNtech R800 Mercedes E63 and E63 S Packs 790 Horses (588 kW)
Debut of the 4-door AMG GT took place at this year’s Geneva Auto Show which resulted in the possibility of a CLS63 being removed. The Mercedes-Benz CLS range now only has to make do with an ‘entry-level’ AMG derivative called the ‘53’ which doesn’t accurately qualify to be part of the high-performance gang in the company’s Affalterbach-based department. But thanks to digital artist Yuliyan Dochev, we can see how a full-on AMG CLS would look like with the new AMG-exclusive design language. We have seen on new and upcoming Mercedes-AMG products the new design language that features the Panamericana grille which is exclusive to the company’s high-performance models. Sadly, because the new CLS will not have a full-on AMG version, it will not wear a full AMG uniform. But Dochev’s renders, showing a Mercedes CLS with the Panamericana grille, may be consolation. Mercedes-AMG originally intended for the E 63 and E 63 S models to produce no more than 571 PS and 612 PS respectively. Yet, German tuner RENNtech had other plans. Opting for the R800 performance package means increasing output to an impressive 800 PS at 6,800 rpm. Maximum torque is then limited at 1,050 Nm (774 lb-ft), considerably more than the 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) generated by the E 63 and E 63 S when stock. Customers can also get the optional ceramic-coated downpipes with 200-cell sports cats, which add an extra 20 PS while further-boosting the soundtrack in Sport and Sport+ modes. Meanwhile, the noise levels in Comfort mode remain relatively the same as before, in both the E 63 and E 63 S. As far as pricing goes, the R800 performance package will set you back close to €15,000 ($17,519) if you also go for the Vmax increase, TUV approval and engine and powertrain warranty (up to 3 years, 100,000 km / 62,000 miles), or just under €12,000 ($14,000) if … [Read more...] about RENNtech Details R800 Performance Pack For Mercedes-AMG E63 And E63 S
