After pulling the cover off the 2019 MX-5 in Japan last week, Mazda just unveiled the US-spec, which benefits from largely the same updates. These include the reworked SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine, which makes 181hp (184PS / 135kW) and 151lb-ft (205Nm) of torque. That’s 26hp (26PS / 19kW) and 3lb-ft (4Nm) of torque more than before. Mazda has also raised the redline from 6,800 rpm to 7,500 rpm, and installed a new exhaust system. The latter is said to provide “richer sound quality”. Thanks to these upgrades, the automaker says the 2019 MX-5 is “more responsive and aims to be more engaging to drive”. Mazda has pleasantly surprised everyone with the current compact CX-5, thanks to its engaging road manners and a cabin that looks and feels more expensive that it really is. For the MY2018, Mazda has updated the spec sheet of the CX-5 and now it includes features like blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard across the range. In addition, the 2.5-liter engine gets a cylinder deactivation system for better fuel economy on the highway. In addition the interior is a lovely environment to spend some time in, … [Read more...] about 2018 Mazda CX-5: An Engaging SUV With A Lovely Interior, But Is It Enough?
Another take on a limited-run MX-5, exclusively for the UK Mazda’s feisty sports car has had plenty of admirers over the years, but that hasn’t stopped the company from producing a range of limited-run editions. And this is the latest one, limited to just 300 cars, all of which will be sold in the UK. Even though this only appeared in March, there’s yet another limited-run special that has already come out since, the RF Sport Black, so is it worth searching out the Z-Sport? Close your eyes while driving and you won’t notice any difference between the Z-Sport and the normal MX-5. That’s because all of the changes are cosmetic. On the other hand, driving with your eyes open is, on balance, recommended. Mazda MX-5 Z-Sport Price: £25,620 This version is based on the Sport Nav, which is the top of the range MX-5, with the Z-Sport costing another £1215 over that model, at £25,620. Mazda has announced a series of changes in the ranks of its most senior executives. And chief among them is the appointment of a new global president and CEO. The role will now fall to one Akira Marumoto (pictured at podium). Mazda‘s current executive vice president has until now headed up the company’s operations in the Americas – including the United States. 60-year-old Marumoto-san takes the place currently occupied by Masamichi Kogai (pictured with concept car). He in turn moves up to the role of chairman. The previous board chairman Seita Kanai will step down from his position to make room for Kogai and Maramoto. How Do You Say “Musical Chairs” in Japanese? Will black detailing justify a limited-run price hike? Mazda 2 Sport Black Price: £15,995 Does 2017 seems a long time ago? It was way back then that Mazda last refreshed its Mazda 2, so clearly this further refresh is long overdue. At first glance you might wonder what’s going on since it’s called the Sport Black but it’s a white car. Mazda has in fact gone subtle. The Black refers to some black accents, such as the spoiler, skirts, grille, alloys and so on. It’s quite discreet. Then there’s the Sport bit. Mazda has refreshed the engine line-up which has meant dumping the diesel option. That means you can have the 2 with a 1.5-litre engine, with either 74bhp, 89bhp or 113bhp. This Sport version gets the middle power version – go figure. So, we’ve deduced that the Mazda 2 Sport Black is a Mazda 2, but it’s neither terribly black nor terribly sporty. But on the other hand Mazda hasn’t messed about with what were a good set … [Read more...] about Mazda 2 Sport Black review: classy additions to sensible supermini
While turbochargers and electrified powertrains seem to take over most of the automotive world, it’s good to see that some things remain the same. Like, say, the Mazda MX-5 that last December received some upgrades for the 2018MY. The best-selling roadster ever is currently in its fourth generation and is much more mature than the model that started it all in 1989. Yes, it’s grown up and gained some weight, mostly due to safety regulations demanding the addition of a comprehensive list of features, but at heart it still follows the same affordable RWD roadster that’s fun to drive recipe as the original. Well, some things have changed. For one, it has spawned Fiat and an Abarth derivative that have a few styling differences, smaller turbocharged engines and… well, are not as spot-on as the Miata. The second significant change in the latest MX-5 is the introduction of a retractable hard-top alongside the soft-top roadster. Mazda calls it the RF, which stands for … [Read more...] about 2018 Mazda MX-5 RF Offers The Most Smiles Per Gallon Bar None
Earlier this year, Road and Track found a VIN filing which suggested the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata could receive a significant power boost. The magazine has discovered further evidence of this as a Canadian dealership reportedly revealed specifications for the car and they eventually made it to the Miata.net forums. While attachment has apparently been removed, it reportedly confirmed the 2019 Miata will have an upgraded 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an “increased rev capacity.” In order to achieve this, the engine has apparently been equipped with lightweight pistons, a new crankshaft and an improved intake. Other changes are slated to include lighter connecting rods, a new throttle body and a freer flowing exhaust. Thanks to all of these modifications, the engine will reportedly produce 181 hp (135 kW) and 151 lb-feet (204 Nm) of torque. If these numbers are correct, the 2019 Miata will have 26 hp (19 kW) and 3 lb-ft (4 Nm) more than its predecessor. The model would … [Read more...] about New Document Suggests 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata Will Have 181 HP

I really miss my 1992 Mazda MX-5 Miata, like a lot. Curiosity got the best of me recently and I went looking for how much a good NA Miata would cost. You can imagine my surprise after seeing how high prices for the classic sports car have risen. And for the life of me, I can’t see why people are willing to pay that much for the car.February 9, 1989, Mazda took the wraps off of MX-5 Miata at the Chicago Auto Show. The vehicle took a lot of inspiration from classic British roadsters for its design and driving philosophy. A lot of the car’s components were new for Mazda, as the automaker wasn’t well versed in making compact, rear-wheel-drive roadsters. Clearly, the brand did a heck of a job, as the roadster was one of the most-affordable and enjoyable sports cars on the road when it came out. Fast forward 28 years to today and the NA Miata is still one of the best used options on the market. Anyone that’s gotten behind the wheel of the original Miata will know why … [Read more...] about When In The World Did NA Mazda MX-5 Miata Prices Get So High?
