It started as a car we were quite enamoured with, thanks to its rakish looks, smart interior and enormous boot. But the Peugeot 308 long-termer we ran a couple of years ago soon became a source of irritation; a car with many niggles which overwhelm its good points. So this mid-life facelift has a lot of heavy lifting to do if it’s to propel the 308 closer to the front of its class. But there’s a good opportunity here for some of the old car’s wrongs to be righted. You’d be hard-pushed to spot the differences unless someone from Peugeot handed you a list, mind you, but then again the 308 was always one of the more stylish offerings in this part of the market. There was a time when England ruled the lawns. Croquet’s first all-comers’ meeting was held in the Cotswolds 150 years ago this summer as the sound of mallet on ball ricocheted across the gardens of the Empire. Many countries have since laid claim to the origins of the sport but there is no doubt it had become hugely popular here by 1868. So much so that the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was registered in Wimbledon that same year. Croquet was especially suitable for Victorian women who are said to have found it less taxing than tennis.
