While we already knew that people like imposing wagons such as the Audi RS6 or the Mercedes-AMG E 63 Estate, here’s an example of somebody going above and beyond in trying to get their Volvo to stand out. So what’s the idea? Is this supposed to look classy? Well, it features a custom grille reminiscent of old Cadillacs from the 80s, wheel covers for the rear (at least the left rear that is), and purple or pink rims, so someone probably thought as much. This body kit also includes the front bumper and possibly some mods at the rear as well. And the headlights, those are definitely not stock, as anybody who’s ever seen an old Volvo V70 will attest. The images was sourced from Reddit’s official thread for “unpopular” car mods, and we certainly won’t argue against this car being where it belongs as far as the thread is concerned. To tell you the truth, though, what this Volvo reminds us of is Top Gear of old, back when Clarkson used to say to the … [Read more...] about There’s An Old Volvo V70 Wagon Under All That Ungainly Cladding
Have you ever seen a car come this close to being a literal example of the old phrase ‘cornering on its door handles’? We suspect not. The car in question is actually more of a van - it’s the ‘Fourgonnette’ version of the Citroen 2CV. Spotted during the launch of the Up GTI in southern France by journalist Andrew Brady, the driver of this 2CV clearly did not want to be shown up by VW’s new baby hot hatch (our own, 2CV-less report from the event will be out this weekend, by the way). As a result, the unhinged pilot was cornering in a way that’s best described as ‘committed’, with the Citroen and its quirky, ultra-soft, ‘interconnected’ suspension exhibiting comedy levels of bodyroll. To the 2CV driver, wherever you are, we salute you. Just try not to tumble down the side of a mountain… … [Read more...] about Watch A Crazed 2CV Driver Give A Lean-Tastic Lesson In Commitment
I’m sure most of us have owned a car that’s left us at our wits’ end. The kind of car that just throws up problem after problem, until you completely fall out of love with it and would happily roll it off a cliff. But did you ever think about burying a troublesome car alive? Tyler Hoover did just that, but then I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised - we are talking about the man who thought it would be a great idea to buy a $7500 BMW 850i. The car in question is a 1983 Chrysler Lebaron (yes, the one with the talking dashboard) exhibiting terminal rust. It’s too much of a basket case to fix up or even give away, so naturally the solution was to bury it. A process which looks weirdly therapeutic. Of course this isn’t something we can recommend trying yourself given all the fluids and other nasty bits that’d be absorbed into the ground, but the LeBaron won’t be in the ground long. Hoover intends to excavate the car in a year’s time to … [Read more...] about When All Else Fails, You At Least Have The Option Of Burying Your Car
As we reported a few months ago, one Subaru WRXs used for the awesome Baby Driver film was auctioned off for a staggering $69,000. But that rear-wheel drive-converted ‘Rex wasn’t the only example used during filming: as is the norm for big productions like these, there were multiple cars, and one ended up in the hands of Ansel Elgort, who played the titular character. He’s been putting it to good use too, taking advantage of the slippery conditions brought on by the ‘bomb cyclone’ snowstorm that’s been hammering the east coast of the United States. Judging from the footage above, Tweeted by the actor himself, this particular WRX prop is still all-wheel drive. You might want to sort yourself a new headlight bulb though, Baby… Via The Drive … [Read more...] about Here’s The Star Of Baby Driver Doing Snowy Skids In The Hero WRX
Popular YouTube channel ‘The Slow Mo Guys’ have done what every car-loving boy has dreamed of since the age of four; namely side-swiping cars and dropping heavy things on them from a great height with the use of a four-tonne wrecking ball (that’s the equivalent of two Mercedes S-classes in weight). The results are as awesome as you’d expect, with massive destruction, a flipped car and a BMW whose (hopefully four-cylinder) engine gets punched at 60mph. Lovely! … [Read more...] about Watch An E46 3-Series Get Hit By A Wrecking Ball In Slow Motion
You might remember our favourite back yard inventor/bonkers YouTuber Colin Furze giving an old, dilapidated E30 BMW 3-series convertible a new lease of life by turning it into a driveable hot tub. The results were amazing, but the trouble is, it’s not exactly hot tub weather in the UK right now. Over the weekend much of the country received a liberal dusting of snow, and the mercury is still overing around the 0 mark for most people. Naturally, then, Furze decided it would be the perfect opportunity to build a giant snowman in the back of his one-of-a-kind E30. And drive it around. Obviously. Never change, Colin… … [Read more...] about Why Wouldn’t You Turn Your E30 Hot Tub Into A Giant Snowman Transportation Device?
Gymkhana parodies are nothing new, but regardless, we still can’t get enough of them. This latest one is particularly endearing, as it centres around a humble, 60bhp Ford Fiesta. Doing lots of skids. The man behind the low-cost tomfoolery is Etienne Guerra, and it’s not actually his first crack at a Ken Block impersonation. His first effort (below) was six years ago, long before sending up the DC Shoe co-founder became cool. That time it featured an older Fiesta, which Guerra claimed to have “found in a shed.” It went on to be watched hundreds of thousands of times, and at the time of writing is sitting at nearly 900,000 views. Which one of these two budget Gymkhana efforts is your favourite? … [Read more...] about ‘Cheapkhana’ Is A Ken Block Parody Featuring A 60bhp Ford Fiesta
The Evoque convertible may have a handful of good features, but is it worth the best part of $70,000? Bearing in mind the giant panel gaps, the awful hood-up visibility, the pointless rear seats and the fact this 11,000 mile example already has a leaking roof and windows that sound “like a baby otter trying to give a distress call to its mother” when they’re being rolled up, probably not. As Doug DeMuro suggests in this in-depth analysis and quirk-finding session, why wouldn’t you just buy a Porsche Boxster? … [Read more...] about Is The Range Rover Evoque Cabriolet An Immense Rip-Off?
You know the saying “hold my beer, I got this”? Well, here’s a man who’s got this with beer still very much in hand. Seriously, someone even offers to hold this guy’s drink, before he proceeds to drive his Can-Am XMR 1000 (a massive ATV with a 1000cc engine) into his own swimming pool. He’s even able to get it out again, although at that point he does finally relinquish his alcoholic beverage. At this point we feel compelled to point out that operating heavy machinery while drinking - not to mention dumping said machinery into a swimming pool - isn’t something that should be replicated. But hopefully you already know that… … [Read more...] about Here’s A Man Driving An ATV Into A Swimming Pool While Holding A Beer, For Some Reason
The Pontiac Aztek is becoming cool in an ironic way, mostly due to being the daily driver of everyone’s favourite meth manufacturer, Walter White. But, it’s a fascinating vehicle for many more reasons than its role in Breaking Bad. Who knew the Aztek had a split-folding tailgate, like a Range Rover? Or a built-in cooler? Or its own Aztek-branded blow-up mattress? As a Brit who’s never seen one of these things up close, I certainly didn’t. What we have here might just be the only genuine ‘lifestyle’ vehicle ever made… … [Read more...] about The Pontiac Aztek Has Some Seriously Weird Features
