Audi introduced the Pop.Up Next concept at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, but it appears their flying car ambitions have been grounded. According to Auto News Europe, the automaker has suspended work on the project and is reviewing their partnership with Airbus. While the Audi had high-hopes for the Pop.Up Next, the difficulties of making a flying car apparently got in the way. In a statement, the company said “We believe it will be a very long time before an air taxi can be serially produced that does not require passengers to change vehicles.” The automaker added the Pop.Up Next tried to solve this problem with a highly complex solution. Confirming recent rumors, Audi has announced plans to bring the A6 Allroad back to America after a 15-year absence.Like the original A6 Allroad that arrived on the market for the 2000 model year, the 2020 edition features adaptive air suspension that can be adjusted to ride 1.8 inches higher than the standard A6 for a total ground clearance of 7.3 inches. When descending on loose surfaces, a special ABS function is designed to create an additional braking wedge in front of the wheels, while the vehicle's tilt angles are displayed on the MMI monitor.For a more connected driving experience on paved roads, drivers can engage the 'dynamic' setting that drops the ground clearance to 4.9 inches. Audi has apparently decided to walk away from its plans for a flying taxi, acknowledging that the technology is far away from commercial viability.The automaker teamed with Airbus to build a flying small-scale prototype of a modular system with a multi-rotor platform that attaches to a car, theoretically allowing someone to take to the skies and streets without stepping out of the vehicle.The companies had been working toward a full-scale flying prototype this year, however the project is now on hold, according to Automotive News Europe."We believe it will be a very long time before an air taxi can be serially produced that does not require passengers to change vehicles," the company said in a statement. Wagon lovers rejoice as Audi has confirmed the A6 Allroad is returning to America next year. Set to arrive 20 years after the first-generation wagon, the 2020 A6 Allroad follows in the footsteps of the European variant which was introduced this summer. As a result, the model has a rugged appearance as it features an Alu-optic skid plate, an Allroad-specific grille and 20-inch alloy wheels. The wagon will also come equipped with matte scandium gray body cladding, but body-colored components will also be available. Detailed specifications will be announced closer to launch, but Audi said the wagon will come nicely equipped with a panoramic sunroof, a Bang & Olufsen 3D premium audio system and an ambient LED interior lighting package.
