The Houston Texans brought one of the most recognizable figures in franchise history home this week when they hired DeMeco Ryans to be their next head coach. Former teammates weigh in on DeMeco Ryans hiring
A handful of former and current Houston Texans players were in attendance on Thursday, including two of Ryans’ most recognizable ex-teammates—Hall of Fame nominee Andre Johnson and fellow Defensive Rookie of the Year Brian Cushing. Both players spoke with the media following the press conference, with each expressing optimism about the future of the franchise under Ryans’ leadership.

Setting the scene
DeMeco Ryans received a warm welcome upon his arrival at the Houston Texans’ facility on Thursday, as a cast of supporters were on hand cheering as he walked into the building. The Texans also set up a collection of posters at NRG Stadium, chronicling Ryans’ NFL journey from star linebacker to rising assistant to Houston’s head coach.

Potential coordinator candidates emerge

Fans, players, Texans greats rejoice over DeMeco Ryans hiring
After three consecutive dismal seasons in which the Texans failed to win more than four games, Ryans’ hiring has brought a jolt of energy to the franchise and its fan base.
Ryans—who was the Defensive Rookie of the Year and a two-time Pro Bowler as a linebacker in Houston—joined a Texans team that was an NFL bottom-feeder as a second-round pick in 2006. He proceeded to play a vital role in their first playoff run in 2011, and through his leadership, helped establish a winning culture that continued on after he left.
Future Hall of Famer J.J. Watt, a rookie defensive end during Ryans’ final season with the team, was one of a handful of current and former Texans who took to social media on Tuesday to express their excitement with the hire. Read more >>

Shortly after Tuesday’s announcement, the Texans released statements from Ryans, CEO Cal McNair and general manager Nick Caserio regarding the hire. Ryans called being the head coach of the Texans his “dream job,” while adding “I understand the responsibility I have to this organization and to the fans of Houston to build a winner.”
