UNSOLVED Mysteries fans have been left divided over ‘nightmarish, next level scary’ episode where taxi drivers were haunted by tsunami victims.

The fourth episode of season two of the Netflix series looks at the devastation and aftermath of the tsunami that hit Japan in 2011, claiming more than 18,000 lives.

It sparked an unusual spate of ghostly incidents involving taxi drivers, who picked up fares that requested to be taken to the Miyagi district.

One driver recalled a man in a heavy coat get into his cab, with his choice of attire seeming odd in the summer heat – although it would have been perfect for the cold temperatures at the time the tsunami hit.

He drove the man to his destination but when he looked in the back seat, the man was no longer there.

This is an experience many other taxi drivers have reported having, and they hope they are helping the spirits get to a place where they can find peace.

Viewers took to Twitter to discuss the ghostly goings on, with one writing: “The Ishinomaki tsunami ghost #UnsolvedMysteries episode was the most fascinating so far in volume 2. I recommend you watch it. The taxi drivers! That’s bananas!”

Another added: “And now the s*** is next level scary. Like…frightened.”

A third tweeted: “These ghostly taxi passenger stories are giving me the heebie-jeebies because it’s like a variation of the vanishing hitchhiker story, of which there are many. Shudder #UnsolvedMysteries.”

However some viewers were a bit unconvinced, with one writing: “You better believe I nope'd out of that Japanese ghost episode of #unsolvedmysteries QUICK – the only nightmares I'm having are about the elections, thanks.”
