Wigan seemed set to hold on to the 27-year-old, having let fellow forward James Vaughan move to Portsmouth earlier in the day. However, with Sunderland desperate to land a goal-scorer that could fire them back to the Championship, a deal has been agreed, the fee expected to be £3m rising to £4m. While the deadline is at 11pm, the Black Cats have secured an extra two hours to finalise the details with a ‘deal sheet’ indicating an agreement has been reached. Sunderland had been linked with a total of seven strikers on deadline day before returning to their initial first choice. The club had seen several bids rejected for Grigg this month before finally coming to an agreement. Grigg has scored four goals in just 10 Championship starts for Wigan this season, having fired 19 goals to help the Latics earn promotion from the third tier last term.
