Ford F-Series trucks are the best-selling in the U.S., and the F-150 has legions of diehard fans who wouldn’t think of buying any other vehicle. What keeps it at the top is its ability to serve equally well as both a work truck and a luxury vehicle.
To that end, the 2018 F-150 has updated engines, features, and styling. There are seven F-150 trim levels starting with the base XL, priced from $27,705 and climbing to $60,850 for the top Limited trim. In between the two, there’s a version of the F-150 for everyone, including the Raptor for those who put off-roading at the top of the list. You can also choose from two transmissions, five engines, three cabs, three boxes, and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive.
Our test model was the F-150 4×4 Supercrew Limited, which sits high in the trim range with a starting price of $64,275. It easily does double duty with impressive capabilities and a luxurious and comfortable interior. Standard features include heated, ventilated front seats that are 10-way power adjustable, along with dual-zone climate control and a twin panel moonroof. The 60/40 split-rear seats are also heated and fold up to provide more room for cargo you don’t want to carry in the bed.
Infotainment includes Ford’s SYNC 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and 10-speaker B&O Play premium audio system. Seating is leather as are the steering wheel, gear selector, and door trims with rich wood accents. It’s an attractive and comfortable space with plenty of room and lots of storage cubbies for stowing all your necessities. The F-150 Limited is a luxury truck and looks the part.
Trucks generally don’t need to handle like a sports car, but the F-150 is a composed ride. Even through snowy, rutted roads, this truck keeps the driver confidently in control. It does, however, get bouncy on rougher pavement or a dirt road, but it won’t get away from you.
One area where it doesn’t do as well as competitors is cabin noise. Road and wind noise are intrusive on the highway, reminding you that no matter how comfortable it is and how good it looks, this is still a truck. The engine, too, sends a fair bit of noise back to passengers, especially under hard acceleration.
Power for our F-150 Limited came from a 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine with 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul, snow/wet, EcoSelect, and sport modes to tailor the drive to road conditions. There was more than enough power to get the F-150 up to speed without any hesitation, and the transmission shifts were smooth and well-timed. This isn’t a small vehicle, but it never feels heavy or ponderous.
As nice as the interior is, this is still a capable work truck. The F-150 can tow up to 13,200 pounds with a maximum payload of 3,270 pounds. There’s an integrated cargo lamp, two front tow hooks, four cargo box tie-downs, and LED box lighting. Accessing the bed is easier, thanks to a remote tailgate release that lets you lock or unlock the tailgate with the key fob or an interior switch.
Standard safety features include a rearview camera with dynamic hitch assist, which adds a dashed line in the center of the usual grid lines to help you see where the back of the truck is pointed as you turn the wheel. Instead of having to guess at the center, this dashed line shows you exactly where the hitch is so you can more easily line it up with a trailer.
The 2018 Ford F-150 offers a wide choice of configurations combined with luxurious interiors and strong capabilities that are sure to keep its loyal fans while attracting new ones.
